Yoga Therapy for Anxiety

Anxiety is a feeling of apprehension or fear. The source of this uneasiness is not always known or recognized, which can add to the distress one feels.

Anxiety is often accompanied by physical symptoms, including twitching or trembling, muscle tension, headaches, dry mouth and abdominal pain (especially in children). Other symptoms that can accompany anxiety include dizziness, rapid or irregular heartbeat, rapid breathing, fatigue, sexual problems, decreased concentration and sleeping difficulties.

Anxiety disorders are categorized as a group of psychiatric conditions that involve excessive anxiety. They include generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), PTSD, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder and social phobia. More than 20 million Americans will suffer one of these during his or her lifetime.

Over the past decade, researchers have started to study alternative methods to alleviate symptoms in patients suffering from anxiety disorders. In 2004, a review was completed of research evidence on the effectiveness of yoga for the treatment of anxiety and anxiety disorders. Overall, positive results were reported, most especially observed in obsessive compulsive disorder patients. More research is being conducted to study the effectiveness of yoga therapy in specific forms of anxiety disorders.
